Who sticks a poet in a kitchen? We do. Food feeds the body mind and soul. We cant get you to heaven but we will try to get inspirational flavours to you.
Now, here’s some ancient history for you. About a hundred years ago (1991) a group of Artists gathered in my house on weekends. Poets, singers, fashion designers, storytellers ect. We would plot, create and discuss ideas for shows exhibitions, new tunes and stuff. We were THE ARTS COLLECTIVE, One of the highlights of those hazy days was the big dinner at Yaw’s House. Every body would put their tuppence in a pot for next week’s big eats. If you did not have a tuppence, it didn’t really matter.
My mum Stella had food joints in Ghana (My old country) I was good with both knifes, the palete and the kitchen. I loved cooking. My Grandma Augusta’s style. Over time, the arts collective evolved into Yaw’s House. The food element got bigger. Non artist friends joined in, to contribute to the pot and join the eats. We started creating events with a food focus. Alongside fashion shows, art exhibitions, poetry reading and plays. Alongside live music, community projects, a fashion outlet, showcases and collaborations. We even run a pop up and a supper club for a while. Art always engrained in the look and feel of the venue and the eats. We catered foe events, we opened events.
Sometime around 1998/99 a client said “This food is better than my mamma’s!” We know we do food good but that was a compliment beyond compare. So though we were called Yaw’s House, those in the know always said….Gimme something that is Better Than Mammas. The suggestion that Yaws House Production be the art and the food become a stand-alone won. We have been Better Than Mammas since 2004.
